ASUS Skype Videophone Touch SV1TW (White) CustomerReview

I purchased this item to be a replacement for my telephone, and for the most part, it certainly does the job. It worked right out of the box and even included a 20 minute battery for times that I want to walk around the house with it. A bit too big to use as portable, but I was able to coordinate work long distance with it. Video quality was very good and the custom camera settings were helpful. If I moved the camera around allot it did get a bit jumpy, but for the most part the video was steady.

I tested it while running netflix video on one computer, and several bandwidth intensive applications on another, and using cable internet through a router the sound and video quality were not affected at all so it proved itself to be very reliable.

It did take me a little while to realize that simply calling the phone number of a skype contact won’t enable video. I have to contact them using their skype name.

One feature I really liked was that, after a minute or so, the screen turns into a clock, and after some time of inactivity the whole screen turns off. It would then turn itself on when a call comes in, or when I touch it. This was a very nice power saving feature… however… it would have been better if there was a single button I could press to force it into this mode.

Another feature I liked was that the power strip seemed to have a kind of battery of it’s own. I noticed that the blue light stays lit even after unplugging it for a short time which seemed to suggest that it uses an extra small battery to prevent power spikes.

My favorite feature was that there was an option to prevent the video from turning on automatically when answering the phone. That way I never have to worry about appearances, and I can disable or enable the video any time during a call without interrupting anything.

One feature I did NOT like was the auto microphone volume. People often tell me I sound like I am talking into a can. There is no where I can go in to manually set the microphone volume, so it fluctuates during a call based on how loud I am speaking… The feature does come in handy though, so I give it 5 stars regardless. I just wish it was as great as the speaker quality.

In any case, it was money well spent and satisfies all my needs.

Gift for mothers day – Kim Bartels –
Bought this product for my 84 year old mother in Florida. She isnt very good with computers. I had my sister help with the broadband andinitial setup. We were talking and seeing each other in one hour. I live in the midwest and cant afford to travel to see her. My mother cried the first time we used the vidiophone. Since then her contact list keeps growing. Cant wait for a newer model. Unit has its imperfections, but there is no alternative. Thanks asus for making a product that doesnt need a genius to operate. thanks skype for keeping this product on the market. you need more exposure in AARP magazine.

The GOOD and the BAD… – L. Blackledge – Dallas
the GOOD: nice size & shape, fairly easy to setup, nice touch screen. the BAD: would not connect to WiFi until I removed the WiFi security (WEP nor WPA), first & second contact in the directory are fixed “telephone” and “dialing test” that cannot be removed they are annoying each time I want to call someone, video occassionally locks up or does not start. Bought this for Grandma and I want it to be VERY simple so she will use it to call us, I’m still debating if I will give it to her with these problems or not.

Welcome to the future of telecommunications! – K. S. Goh – Bukit Timah, Singapore
At comparable price to a cellphone, this 9 unit does what we’ve always been seeing in science fiction movies since the 80’s… or was it the 70’s?

I have been using a Netgear SPH200D… but I got it when it was cheap… around 0. The price shot up right after I got it, and right now, this is a MUCH better deal than that audio-only Netgear phone.

The unit boots up in seconds, logs in automatically, and you’re online in 1 minute! Of course, you’ll have to go through the initial set up of wifi password and Skype login, but once that’s done, using this is as easy as hitting a speed dial key in your office phone.

Okay, this unit has a few small drawbacks, but not enough for me to stop raving about it though.
Here’re the “cons” of the unit:
- Battery life… the battery is really designed for short term away from a power outlet. 20-30 minutes. But here’s the thing, the battery felt LIGHT… that means someone can actually make a higher capacity battery if they wanted to.

- The stand is not foldable, so this unit really cannot be considered “portable”. You’d find it hard to stick this in any kind of travel bag due to the odd shape. But I would agree it’s “portable within your home”.

- The contact list doesn’t separate phone contact vs skype contact. So it’s not possible to get a nice “who’s online” list that you can see in a quick glance, like the PC or iPod Touch app.

- I read somewhere someone mentioned the camera was not up to par… well, really, this isn’t a photographic device, it’s meant for video calling. So I’ll half agree that the low megapixel camera can be improved.

Other areas of possible improvement:
- It makes a great clock when not in a call (it shows the time, but goes away after a minute). Why not make the clock a permanent feature, and add in an alarm?

- The 7″ screen is big enough to make it a digital photo frame, ASUS should think about adding a simple SD card slot for personal photos.

Despite all the above, this is a FANTASTIC Skype phone. The design is futuristic, the controls are simple enough, the video call quality is great for what it is… highly recommended!
